Made In the USA

Spring Valley rises from the ashes
Rocks, asphalt, wood, brick, wire, pipes
House after house
Street after street
Quickly, efficiently, robustly
“Juan, dame la madera.”

Framing all day
Roofing all night
Continuously
Twelve hours a day
Digging and plumbing
Seven days a week

Sweat flies with hammer and nail
With Shovel and pipe
“Miguel, un poco de agua por favor.”
With each blow spikes and nails sink
Inch by blasted inch
Joists levered in place
More sweat
More grime
Tough grind

Then finally a break

Twelve hours and the sun says enough
On a day when work does not end
Time to bathe and feed
The owner’s most valuable tool
Remove the dust from its pores
From its engine
Lubricate its parts
So that beads of sweat will cool it
Beads of sweat that drip
Beads of sweat that run
the length of it’s sleeves and trousers
And capture the grime of a 12 hour day
Spring Valley made in the USA
